Overview

The Laboratory Assistant/Laboratory Medical Billing works as a phlebotomist, specimen processor and
also gets samples ready to send to reference laboratories along with various laboratory billing duties.
This position will handle faxes and reports to make sure results are delivered in a timely manner. This
position will audit charges in Orchard and claims in eCW to verify charges are posted correctly before
being filed to insurance. This position will audit all reference lab invoices to verify charges have posted
and send in insurance information to reference labs for those that need to be charged by the reference
lab. This position will research denials before sending balances to patient.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

1. Assist in collecting samples, checking in patients, and other phlebotomy area duties.
2. Verify the identity of every patient before collecting any samples. Ensure proper patient
    identification and sample collection using paper orders in the event of an interruption in computer
    service.
3. Perform venipuncture and finger/heel stick procedures with a high degree of professionalism and
    concern for the patient, including a minimum of 2 sticks per encounter. Collect nasal swabs, throat
    swabs and blood cultures when needed.
4. Label specimens with a high degree of accuracy. Ensure proper tubes are used for each blood test
    ordered.
5. Be aware of Medicare guidelines, send-out test requirements, and special tests. Explain Medicare
    ABNs to patients clearly and accurately.
6. Comply with all safety policies and OSHA regulations.
7. Process and prepare samples for testing and shipping.
8. Be proficient in working with appropriate computer applications.
9. Scan documents in the appropriate folders as needed. Manage the folders for future scans.
10. Take telephone messages and responds appropriately. Deliver, telephone, or fax reports.
11. Research lab billing problems.
12. Audit invoices from reference laboratories. Request credits and send insurance information for
      refiling. Forward to the supervisor for follow up review. Manage requests from reference laboratories
      for insurance information and ABNs.
13. Audit charge log from Orchard daily checking for duplicate charges. Manage the send to host log in
     Orchard to verify accuracy of charges.
14. Under the direction of the laboratory manager, review eCW claims for coding & insurance
      problems. Prepare claim to be submitted to Insurance. Work the lab-related task queues in a timely
      manner.
15. Work the patient match queue in Orchard. Notify the supervisor of any abnormalities.
16. Maintain accuracy in all work. Complete tasks on time and per any deadlines.
17. Perform all duties with a high degree of accuracy.
18. Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school or GED, plus specialized schooling and/or on the job education in a specific skill
area; e.g. data processing, clerical/administrative, equipment operation, etc.
EXPERIENCE GENERAL
12 to 18 months related experience and/or training.
EXPERIENCE MANAGEMENT
7 to 11 months related management experience.
